Local Option - Solar Sales Tax Exemption

New York enacted legislation in July 2005 exempting the sale and installation of residential solar-energy systems from the state's sales and compensating use taxes. The exemption applies to solar-energy systems that utilize solar radiation to produce energy designed to provide heating, cooling, hot water and/or electricity. In 2012 the exemption was also extended to commercial solar energy systems, effective January 1, 2013. Roaring Fork Valley - Energy Smart Colorado Energy Efficiency Rebate Program

Energy Smart Colorado is the first rural multi-jurisdictional consortium in the U.S. to implement a comprehensive residential energy efficiency program.

Residents of Boulder, Eagle, Gunnison, Lake, Pueblo and surrounding counties, Roaring Fork Valley, Southwest Colorado, Summit, Park, Yampa Valley, Routt, and Moffat counties are eligible for energy efficiency and renewable energy assistance, rebates, and financing through the Energy Smart Colorado program. Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative - Solar Water Heater Rebate Program

Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative Association (Linn County RECA) is a member-owned cooperative. To encourage energy efficiency, Linn County offers a number of rebates to commercial, residential, and agricultural customers. Owners of both new construction and existing buildings are eligible for a $350 rebate for solar water heaters. The water heaters must have an auxiliary tank of at least 40 gallons and the solar water heater must be ENERGY STAR rated. See the program web site for applications and more information.

Voluntary Clean Energy Portfolio Standard

In May 2011, Indiana enacted S.B. 251, creating the Clean Energy Portfolio Standard (CPS), also known as the Comprehensive Hoosier Option to Incentivize Cleaner Energy (CHOICE) program. The program sets a voluntary goal of 10% clean energy by 2025, based on the amount of electricity supplied by the utility in 2010. Indiana's participating utilities receive an incentive to increase the amount of renewable energy sources in their portfolio.

New Braunfels Utilities - Residential Solar Water Heater Rebate Program

New Braunfels Utilities offers a rebate for residential customers who purchase and install solar water heating systems on eligible homes. A rebate of the equivalent of $0.265 per kWh is available to these customers. The maximum rebate amount is $900 for participating customers. Applicants must have an active residential electric service account with NBU in order to be eligible. Solar water heaters must preheat water for an electric water heater that is permanently installed and is the main water heating source. A contractors invoice or receipt must include documentation for all requirements as stated in the program guidelines.

Questar Gas - Home Builder Gas Appliance Rebate Program

Questar Gas provides incentives for home builders who incorporate energy efficiency into new construction. Builders can receive equipment rebates for a variety of energy efficiency measures implemented in new homes. All equipment and construction requirements must be met in order to participate. Questar Gas - Residential Energy Efficiency Rebate Programs

Questar Gas provides rebates for residential customers who make their homes more energy efficient by installing certain energy saving appliances, efficient heating equipment, and certain weatherization measures. Incentives are available for a variety of energy efficiency measures, including water heaters, furnaces, boilers, insulation, and programmable thermostats. 

To qualify for rebates, appliances and equipment must run on gas and must meet the minimum efficiency levels stated on the program web site. City of Houston - Property Tax Abatement for Green Commercial Buildings

Note: These guidelines and criteria for tax abatement were readopted by the City Council on August 28, 2024, and absent further extension they will expire on August 28, 2024.

In September 2009, the City of Houston Tax Abatement Program was enacted (Ordinance No. 2009-858), establishing a partial tax abatement for U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified commercial buildings. The tax abatement was extended most recently in 2024 under Ordinance No. 2024-624.

City of Los Angeles - Green Building Retrofit Requirement

In April 2009, Los Angeles enacted Ordinance 180636, known as the Green Building Retrofit Ordinance. This ordinance was later amended by Ordinance 182259. The law requires all city-owned buildings that are either more than 7,500 square feet or built before 1978 to be retrofitted. The goal of the retrofits will be to achieve LEED for Existing Buildings Silver certification or higher. This requirement is subject to the availability of state or federal funds. New York City - Residential Solar Sales Tax Exemption

New York City passed Resolution 1121 in August 2005 (effective December 1, 2005) to exempt residential solar energy systems equipment and services from sales tax. As a city with a population of 1 million or more, New York City had to pass this resolution in order to offer the same exemption as the state.
